Briefing: The Architecture of Authoritarian Continuity
As Myanmar reaches the fifth anniversary of the February 1, 2021, military coup, the geopolitical landscape has shifted from a state of “active coup” to the “institutionalization of collapse.” This is no longer a temporary crisis of governance; it is a permanent structural decay orchestrated by a military elite determined to survive at any cost. The transition from the State Administration Council (SAC) to the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) represents a tactical rebranding designed to project stability while the military formalizes its grip on a nation it can no longer effectively administer.

Cover Story: Why Myanmar Remains Poor and Persecuted
The primary driver of the current crisis is the lethal intersection of total economic failure and relentless political persecution. The junta’s attempt to manufacture legitimacy through a staged election has not restored order; instead, it has created a landscape where state institutions exist solely to extract revenue for the military machine. The nation’s generational potential is being traded for the short-term survival of a clique that governs through aerial bombardment, forced conscription, and the systematic dismantling of the country’s intellectual capital.
China’s Strategic Intervention: Beijing has repeatedly pressured Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs) into operational pauses and ceasefires to protect its own infrastructure and pipelines, effectively shielding the junta from total collapse.
Resistance Fragmentation: The lack of a fully unified federal leadership allows the military to regroup and enables external actors to manipulate the revolution for their own regional interests.
Governance Gaps: While revolutionary forces hold territory, the transition from military victory to administrative credibility remains uneven, eroding international confidence in the resistance as a “state-in-waiting.”
